A teaching career can be very rewarding, and if you are wondering how to become a teacher, the first thing you should know is that the career path involves both educational and practical components. To earn your teacher certification, you need to complete a college degree as well as a set number of hours of practice teaching in real classroom environments.

The teaching degrees you can earn include Bachelor of Education, Master of Education or Doctor of Education. You can earn these degrees at dedicated teacher colleges.

During your teacher education, you will be introduced to a complete range of pedagogical concepts that help you understand how students learn. You will be instructed on techniques you can use in all sorts of situations, given that no two students are alike and many people have different learning styles. You’ll also learn how to deal with problematic students and how to establish and maintain control of a classroom.

After you complete your education degree, you will then have to complete your practical training. This consists of practice teaching sessions in actual classrooms, which are supervised by certified teachers working with your school. The exact number of hours of practice teaching that you will have to complete varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, but you should expect your practical training period to last about one calendar year. Your teacher’s college will help you find a practical training placement when you are ready.

There are also specialized types of teacher education. One example of this is early childhood education, which is typically abbreviated as ECE. These programs focus specifically on helping you understand the educational needs of children up to about age five. Alternately, you can focus on teaching grade school children or high school students.

You can attend a teacher’s college after completing an undergraduate degree in just about any discipline, or head straight into a career path as an educator. If you already have an undergraduate degree, you may be able to complete your teaching degree in a shorter period of time. You should also explore alternatives to traditional classroom environments.
