If you want to become a nurse, you need to properly prepare for this exciting and rewarding but demanding career. There are many different types of nursing schools and programs, and you should familiarize yourself with the full range of available options before deciding on any particular career path.

You can attend registered nurse colleges or earn your diploma or degree from a four-year college or healthcare education center. Some programs lead to degrees, while others lead to diplomas and professional certifications. Here is an overview of the major types of nursing programs:

  • CNA nursing programs. CNA stands for certified nursing assistant. If you take CNA nursing classes online or in a traditional environment, you will build the skills you need to earn work as a healthcare support worker. Many people who are interested in becoming nurses but aren’t certain the career is for them start with CNA nursing programs, then go on to pursue further education.
  • LPN nursing programs. An LPN is a licensed practical nurse. A related designation is LVN, or licensed vocational nurse. LVN and LPN online nursing programs are geared towards providing you with the educational foundation you will need before you move into your practical training at a hospital or health care center. LPN and LVN nursing programs, by their very nature, combine classroom training with field placements.
  • BSN and MSN programs. You can also earn a Bachelor of Science in nursing, or a Master of Science in nursing if you have already completed a related undergraduate degree and qualify for graduate-level studies. These programs tend to lead to the greatest range of career opportunities, as your studies go into significant depth.       

In addition to traditional classroom settings, you can also attend nursing schools online. Web-based courses provide you with the foundational principles you will need to apply to real-life situations.

Becoming a nurse is hard work, but it is also an excellent career.
